Is Trauma Keeping You Stuck?

A woman sitting down on a rock on a hilltop

Have you been living with the negative effects of trauma for longer than you can remember?

Does self-doubt permeate your daily routine, prompting you to second-guess nearly every decision you make?

Do you struggle to maintain close relationships because, on some deeper level, you feel unworthy of love?

The pervasive ways in which trauma has shaped you may be difficult to gauge. In addition to more noticeable PTSD symptoms, such as flashbacks, panic attacks, and nightmares, the impact trauma has had on you may be more insidious.

Perhaps you’re convinced that something is inherently wrong with you that can’t be fixed. As a result, a sense of stuckness and dissatisfaction may have settled over your life, depriving you of the passion, creativity, and purpose you seek.

You Can’t Deny That’s Something’s Amiss

Maybe when looking back on your past experiences, you tend to minimize what happened. You might compare yourself to others and conclude that, in contrast to them, you didn’t have it so bad and have nothing to complain about.

Yet there’s no denying the fact that something doesn’t feel right. Remaining engaged and on task at work or home may prove difficult. Social situations may trigger a sense of dread. When feelings become overwhelming, you may opt to disassociate by scrolling through your phone or finding other ways to distract yourself. Rather than feeling safe in your body, a deep restlessness might keep you on constant alert for potential danger.

Trauma counseling provides a supportive space where your experiences can be transformed into strengths that empower your growth. By bringing awareness to what your mind and body are trying to tell you, the symptoms of trauma and PTSD become the guiding force to build resilience, regain energy, and discover a greater sense of purpose.

We’ve Been Conditioned To Hold Onto Trauma

We all experience trauma of one kind or another. However, the difference between holding onto trauma that manifests as PTSD or C-PTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) often depends on what happens afterward. When we receive adequate support from others soon after the trauma has occurred, we’re able to process our emotions and feelings through our bodies more effectively.

Unfortunately, in the absence of support, most of us have lost our human instinct to process trauma on our own. This is often due to the prevailing cultural norm that teaches us to bottle up our emotions rather than express how we truly feel. As a result, we’ve gradually lost touch with our natural instinct that encouraged body-based reactions to surface. This avoidance has led to more trauma-based conditions, such as PTSD and C-PTSD, that negatively influence how we think and feel.

The Impact Of Generational Trauma

Beyond what we experience directly, trauma is often passed down from generation to generation. Our caregivers were shaped by their parents, who in turn were shaped by their parents. Once established, a cycle of trauma can repeat over multiple generations, perpetuating a loop that’s difficult to break out of.

The good news is that in recent decades, our understanding of trauma has expanded. In addition to its mental and emotional impact, we now have more awareness about how trauma gets stuck in the body. This has led to more somatic approaches for trauma healing being integrated into PTSD therapy.

With an array of effective options for trauma and PTSD treatment available, you can embark on a journey of self-discovery. Shifting your focus inward in therapy will help you identify what remedies best align with you to process trauma and reveal your soul’s purpose.

I Offer An Innovative Approach To Trauma And PTSD Therapy

When we experience trauma in our formative years, we are often instilled with the false belief that we are bad or broken. That’s because the other option available to us at that time was admitting that something was wrong with our caregivers. But since drawing this conclusion would be too destabilizing, we choose instead to turn the blame on ourselves.

In subsequent years, you may have become emotionally stuck, suffering from a malaise of ongoing anxiety and depression that has left you hopeless that things will ever change. However, another way of looking at things is that your trauma is begging you to pay attention to it for a reason. When you process underlying trauma in therapy, you can alchemize it to harness your divine energy force and access internal wisdom.

What To Expect In Sessions

My approach to trauma therapy is akin to a spiritual journey, helping you manifest a fuller, richer life experience. A side effect of processing your trauma will be uncovering your brilliance and true purpose along the way. First, we identify your available “resources”, focusing on people, places, and things that feel positive and life-enhancing to you. This could be anything, from supportive family members, outdoor activities, art, or any practice that regulates your nervous system and gets you in a state of flow.

After establishing a foundation of safety and trust with me, we will then gauge your readiness for trauma processing. Depending on your preferences, we can incorporate various modalities, including expressive arts, nature-based therapy, body movement, mindfulness, EMDR therapy, psychodrama, and other approaches that align with your goals.

Long-term goals for therapy will come from you. I will provide my unwavering support and collaboration, offering suggestions to ensure progress. We will revisit these goals as we go, as processing trauma may shift your priorities and prompt you to reimagine how you want your life to look moving forward.

Trauma Therapy That Feeds The Spirit

When it comes to trauma recovery, I have found that taking a “soulistic” approach to therapy serves my clients well. We are each unique creatures who won’t necessarily benefit from a cookie-cutter approach. As a trauma and PTSD counselor, the modalities I’m trained in are designed to nourish the soul, soothe the nervous system, and create space for more creativity, curiosity, and aligning with your soul’s purpose. These include:

  • Expressive arts therapy

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Mindfulness and breathwork

  • Somatic body movement

  • Soul-based parts work

  • Psychodrama therapy

  • Wilderness therapy

Despite how stuck you may feel right now, remember that the brain’s neuroplasticity makes it possible to forge new neural pathways, which not only offers emotional relief but also a different way of viewing the world. Once trauma has been processed and integrated, it can add a richness and depth to life you never thought possible.

But Maybe You’re Not Sure If Trauma Therapy Is Right For You…

Will processing complex childhood trauma in therapy mean I will have to reexperience it?

Understandably, the idea of reliving a trauma can be overwhelming. As a trauma and PTSD therapist, I am highly sensitive to this. We will establish a foundation of safety and go slowly whenever necessary. Although you might recap what happened to you, the focus of trauma counseling is to let go of any stuck energy and restore life force to your body, mind, and spirit.

I worry that PTSD counseling will take too long.

Although the amount of time you spend in therapy depends on your needs and preferences, what I have noticed over the years is that experiencing some level of relief is usually immediate. Full recovery from trauma can take time, but one day you will look back and see how far you’ve come. Consistent trauma therapy helps rewire the nervous system and build new neural pathways that alter how you think and feel.

I can’t afford trauma treatment.

Although the cost of therapy may seem high, the reality is you are worth every penny and deserve to receive the support you need. When you consider the long-term benefit of PTSD counseling over your lifetime, it’s well worth the investment.
