Do You Want To Integrate The Healing Benefits Of Nature Into Therapy?
Are you feeling stuck and unmotivated in life?
When you witness the current state of the world, do you often feel overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed?
Have you been looking for a way to not only improve your mental health but also engage more deeply in creativity and self-expression?
It’s no surprise that many of us feel disconnected and burnt out these days. Maybe you’re facing a life transition that’s left you with self-doubt and uncertainty. You might be dissatisfied with your job or challenged by a current relationship. Or maybe you feel disconnected from your true self and seek a new way to access your own intuition and wisdom.
You Could Be Craving A Deeper Connection To The Natural World
Perhaps the anxious thoughts and low mood you experience are heightened by your interaction with technology. Whether it’s doomscrolling into the wee hours, comparing yourself to others on social media, or spending hours at work staring at a screen, you may be feeling hollowed out and depleted by technology. Although your inner brilliance may be searching for ways to feel better, looking to your phone for solace can be a trap that keeps you stuck, leading to anxiety and depression.
Despite the many benefits of living in the digital age, you may yearn for a deeper connection with nature. If you have tried traditional therapy without much success, it’s time you consider incorporating the healing benefits of the outdoors into your mental health care practice. Incorporating the natural world into therapy sessions not only helps you access what your body and mind need to heal, but it can also help reveal your soul’s purpose.

What Happens In Wilderness Therapy?
In wilderness therapy, the goal is to identify and develop resources—life-affirming feelings and sensations—that can be applied to all facets of life. In an experiential nature therapy session, we will meet at an outdoor setting in South Austin. There, we will journey into the center of the forest, allowing the surrounding trees, rocks, dirt, and sky to reflect your emotions, assist in nervous system regulation, and help you to detach from the daily grind.
Oftentimes, when we are in the woods, trauma can be processed in a way that can feel impossible to access within four walls. We combine the healing energy of nature with grounding and expressive therapies—such as mindfulness techniques, breathwork, psychodrama, art, and music—to reveal the deeper roots of your challenges and issues. Engaging with your creativity in this natural setting allows you to get in touch with your inner world in a more grounded, intuitive, and embodied way.
How Nature Can Help Us Heal
Being in the outdoors and interacting with the natural world allows us to go deeper than traditional talk therapy. We begin to see our reflections in the natural beings around us, guiding us to feel more connected to our life force, energy, and place in the world. Interwoven with other experiential approaches, wilderness therapy creates a platform to move beyond ruminating thoughts that distract us and to find the stuck places in our bodies that hold the roots of our challenges.
Rather than just focusing on thoughts, nature therapy integrates mind, body, and spirit. In this way, outdoor therapy can help process trauma and alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Wilderness Therapy Can Cultivate A Deeper Connection With Nature And Guide You To Your Soul’s Purpose
At our core, we are each a part of the natural world. However, in today’s technologically advanced world, many of us have disconnected from where we come from. We often find ourselves spending most of our time indoors, glued to screens rather than connected to nature, which can lead to heightened anxiety and a sense of feeling stuck and burned out.
But it’s time we find our way back. Wilderness therapy helps us remember who we are and access the brilliance within us that is our birthright. Similar to the Japanese custom of forest bathing, outdoor therapy acknowledges the abiding wisdom of nature to ground and heal us.
Communing In Nature Is Medicine For The Soul
As a nature therapist, my first objective is to make sure you feel comfortable and safe in the forest. I will take special care to meet you where you are, whether you’re used to spending lots of time outdoors or are less familiar with a natural setting. No matter where you’re coming from, I will follow your cues and move at your pace.
We begin each session with a meditation so you will feel relaxed and open to exploring your environment. From there, therapy will be improvisational, weaving together various modalities with interactive experiences inspired by the surrounding nature. Using the external environment as a metaphor for internal thoughts and feelings allows you to see what’s happening in your life with fresh eyes.
In wilderness therapy, you can:
Learn how to ground into the earth and benefit from its healing qualities
Hone resources to regulate challenging emotions
Break from technology and access more creativity and expression
Connect with your soul purpose
Forge a connection with the natural world that you can continue to cultivate wherever you are
What Drew Me To Nature-Based Therapy
Like so many people, when I first discovered nature therapy, I was searching for something deeper in my own healing journey. I’ve always felt soothed and comforted by the natural world, which made this work a natural fit for me. Since finding a nature therapist in Colorado who would eventually become my mentor, my life has changed.
My time spent in nature, both as a mentee and therapist, has connected me to my soul purpose. My spirituality has awakened deeply, and the breadth and depth of my life have expanded in ways I never would have dreamed of. Witnessing these same kinds of transformations unfold with my clients has been a sincere honor and privilege.
Wilderness therapy is the perfect antidote for today’s fast-paced, tech-dependent world. In nature, you can slow down, quiet your mind, and access deeper wisdom. Through the healing and self-exploration that’s only possible in the woods, your soul can find space to reveal itself to you.
You May Still Be Wondering If Wilderness Therapy Is Right For You…
Will outdoor therapy be safe? What if we experience extreme weather conditions?
Coming from a culture where we spend so much of our time indoors, it can feel unfamiliar— and possibly uncomfortable—to be suddenly immersed in nature. As we work together, we will develop a deeper relationship with the natural world, ensuring that we proceed at a comfortable pace. In cases of extreme weather, we can either reschedule to meet in my office or, if that’s not possible, we can meet online.
Is wilderness therapy possible via telehealth?
Yes, nature therapy can also be effective via telehealth. A virtual wilderness therapy session might look like bringing animals or other natural elements into whatever space you attend telehealth, allowing us to incorporate experiential approaches that build a relationship with the outdoors. In between sessions, I will invite you to venture into the natural world on your own for “forest work,” and then we can debrief and integrate your experience at our next session.
Is experiential nature therapy as effective as other, more traditional approaches?
Similar to yoga, outdoor therapy helps integrate mind, body, and soul into one experience for maximum benefit. Leaving the confines of the indoors to receive therapy in nature opens you up to a deeper knowing of your true self. Your logic-based, analytical mind can step aside, allowing more intuitive forms of expression and healing to come forward.
